Community News

“Volunteers, teachers, students, scouts, and community members comprise Harper JHS’s group titled Friends of Frances. They will meet for another work party Saturday March 10 from 9 am to 12 noon at Harper JHS to help beautify the school campus – specifically to improve our bicycle entrance! Tree-planting, hedge-trimming, mulching, and much more! Just drop by! No sign-up necessary. Stay as long as you’d like. Bring water and work clothing. Bring your own tools and gloves or use ours. If helping with mulch, you might want to bring a dust mask. All are welcome! Consider bringing a breakfast treat for our 10:15 break! Contact science teacher Ken McKim at kmckim@djsud.net with any concerns or questions or donations. Friends of Frances has 3 work party dates this spring: March 10, March 24, and April 24 – all are Saturdays – all from 9 am to 12 noon.”

PARENT NEWS

Dear Parents, Students and Community members,

Today we had our second quiet and productive day at Harper after the very worrisome threat to our school on Friday afternoon.   We are so grateful to everyone that has helped us so that we could continue to provide safe educational services to the young people that attend Harper Junior High School.  We have had continuous support from our District Office and the Davis PD; we are sincerely fortunate to have had this level of commitment to ensure the safety of students and staff.  Harper site administrators are currently working with the District Office to review and refine all safety protocols. Thanks go out to all of our teachers, staff members and students for making yesterday and today good days at school.

Many of you in our parent community have reached out to me recently, and I so appreciate your kindness and supportive messages.  If anyone would like to talk more with me about future plans, or our school safety plan, feel free to give me a call at school.  (530 757-5330.)

Our District Leaders and Site Administrators have been meeting to refine our emergency procedures that are currently in place.

Please take a moment to review two parts of Dr. John Bowes' announcement on our District's website:

Sincerely,

Kerin Kelleher-Principal

School Safety in DJUSD and Student Walkouts

In light of the recent Harper Junior High threat and the tragic shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, please take a moment to read Superintendent John Bowes’ statement to the Board of Education on March 1, 2018, about student safety in Davis Joint Unified and expectations for students and staff pertaining to any potential student walkouts to advocate for gun control. Read full his Superintendent Statement.

Gun Safety

Throughout our country there continues to be news reports of children bringing guns to school, and many times the child has obtained the weapon from his/her home.  These incidents can be prevented by storing firearms in a safe and secure manner including keeping them locked up when not in use and storing them separately from ammunition. In addition, California law makes a person criminally liable for improper storage of a firearm.  Additional information can be found on the memo from our Superintendent and by reviewing AB 424.  Thank you for helping to keep our children safe at home and school.
