Parents and Guardians,

Netflix’s  “13 Reasons Why” Season 2 releases tomorrow, May 18, 2018. Last year, when the first season of the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" was released, many students in DJUSD were negatively impacted by the show's content. School counselors and Prevention & Crisis Managers supported students as young as 5th grade who were highly distressed as a result of watching the series. While the series can provide an opportunity for discussion on important issues our youth face, the content from season one glamorized mean behaviors and inaccurately represented the responses of adults. For more information, visit the DJUSD Crisis Services page.

Warmly,

Your Prevention & Crisis Managers, Cara Messmore and Natalie Zehnder

Yesterday evening, Da Vinci High students and parents reported a concerning message posted to social media threatening a school shooting today. The Da Vinci administration received copies of this post and worked through the night with DJUSD Administration and the Davis Police Department to address the matter. While this investigation is ongoing we can confirm that the student that posted the message has been identified and will not be present on campus today. All schools in the Davis Joint Unified School District, including Da Vinci High School and the Valley Oak Preschool Programs are open today.

DJUSD Administrative personnel and Davis Police Department will be present on the Da Vinci High campus today to ensure student and staff well-being safety and address any questions they have. If you have information that might be helpful to the investigation, please contact Davis Police directly at 530-747-5400 and press "0" to reach Dispatch.

We understand that there are many students and families across our district that may share concerns about this matter. If you feel that your child needs support, please contact your school principal.

Student safety and the security of our schools is our top priority. We thank you for your support of students, staff and schools.

This Wednesday is the final Late Start Wednesday. Next week on Wednesday, May 30th school will begin at 8:30am.

Parents of 9th Grade Students- Freshman Trip- Your child’s Freshman Trip forms and donations are due. The due date has been extended to Monday. Please make any donations payable to Harper PTO.

Due to the minimum day schedule on June 7th Japanese 1 and Spanish 4 will not meet. Please have your student go to their second period class as scheduled on those days.

PARENT NEWS

The Freshman Showcase is Thursday afternoon May 17. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and observe their student’s presentation. Programs will be available for you when you arrive on May 17th at 12:15 pm. If you only wish to see your student’s presentation please speak with them about their time and location. To minimize interruptions, once an individual’s presentation begins, we cannot let in audience members into the room until the end of that presentation which normally takes about 15 minutes. Friends and family members are also welcome to attend just the presentation for your son/daughter or stay and observe your son or daughter’s friends’ presentations. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe the tremendous growth our freshmen have made, and we strongly encourage you to attend this event. If your student does not remember their presentation times the scheduled times are posted at both the Library and Office.

Due to the minimum day schedule on May 17th and June 7th Japanese 1 and Spanish 4 will not meet. Please have your student go to their second period class as scheduled on those days.

Thought for Today:  “This is a new day, a new beginning.” – Ahsoka Tano

This Day in History: 2011 – The first “May the Fourth be With You” day was celebrated.

Star Wars Day, May 4, celebrates Star Wars created by George Lucas. It is observed by fans of the movies. Observance of the holiday spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations. The date was chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you" as "May the Fourth be with you". Even though the holiday was not actually created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday.

Thought for Today:  Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity. Herbert Hoover

This Day in History: 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates New York City’s Empire State Building, pressing a button from the White House that turns on the building’s lights. Hoover’s gesture, of course, was symbolic; while the president remained in Washington, D.C., someone else flicked the switches in New York.

Thought for Today:  “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” - J.K. Rowling

This Day in History: 1983, the Soviet Union releases a letter that Russian leader Yuri Andropov wrote to Samantha Smith, an American fifth-grader from Manchester, Maine, inviting her to visit his country. Andropov’s letter came in response to a note Smith had sent him in December 1982, asking if the Soviets were planning to start a nuclear war. At the time, the United States and Soviet Union were Cold War enemies.
